The Gruppo Folkloristico di Verica, named after its place of origin, Verica, a small town near Pavullo in the mountains south of Modena, was created in 1981. Its main purpose is to keep alive the rich tradition of dance and music of the Modenese Appennine mountains. This tradition is found in its most significant forms in the rites and celebrations of Carnival.
A special atmosphere of joy and liveliness permeates the dances, costumes and musical themes which are at the core of the Group’s repertory. And this is what the Group is seeking to preserve, through minimally choreographed dances, filled with light, color and swift movements.
An integral part of the male costume, the tall, cone-shaped hat, is a source of curiosity: shiny, multi-colored, topped with a plume, it swings to the rhythm of the music, making the dances look even more spectacular.
The Group is made up of 25 dancers, both male and female, with ages ranging from 6 to 25, and of a 5-piece orchestra playing traditional instruments: clarinet, accordion, bass, guitar and percussion.
Since it is built around distinct moments, the repertory can be adapted to any program requirement. The performances can be designed either as a parade of masked dancers who engage in sporadic dances and numbers, interacting with the audience. Or they can be conceived as a 90-minute programme of joyful, lively dances with some short humorous skits, performed on a stage or any other suitable space.
Although firmly rooted in its own traditions, the Group has grown artistically through the experience it has gathered over its many years of intense activity. Its program now offers newly choreographed , contemporary performances.
In fact, the Group has added modern dance lessons to the traditional artistic training of its members. It has also become actively involved in a policy of exciting cultural exchanges worldwide. Every year, it invites Folkloristic Organizations to participate in the international Folklore Festival, “Frignano in Festival” held in Italy. For its part, the Group has travelled to festivals abroad, in Spain, France, Poland, Germany, England, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Holland and the USA. These are some of the countries where the Gruppo Folkloristico Di Verica has met with its biggest successes.
